So my 8 year old Brandy had breath you could smell across the room, like something was DYING in there. Took her to get her teethies looked at and they were rotting and infected and the vet extracted 5 FIVE!! of her teeth including her killer long front sabertooth upper fangs. It was quite a surgery for the poor thing, and her temperature dropped and they had to give her fluids and put her in an incubator and it turned into a much bigger deal than I expected. Not to mention I was NOT expecting a $600 tab!! But she bounced back so fast, and although she only has like 3 teeth left now (she'd had a couple extracted a few years ago) shes wolfing down the dry food (and throwing it back up!).
So is it true that meezers are known for having bad teeth? Her sister Karma hasnt had nearly as many teeth problems as Brandy.

Re: Meezers with bad teeth
Mon, April 25, 2005 - 3:44 PMI have never heard of it but it may very well be the case. I know we are supposed to brush their teeth and all but what cat is gonna sit there and let you do that, you know?? That's crazy about your cat but I'm glad to hear she was alright :) -

Wed, April 27, 2005 - 8:20 PMOh man, I'm going to need two more arms to hold Tyler down to brush his teeth...
What do you know about "instruments" for brushing the teeth" of a young, active (mostly - when he's not having a Feline Herpes episode), and bouncy little guy? -

Thu, May 5, 2005 - 10:07 AMSupposably you use anything, even a paper towel wrapped around your finger, or a q-tip. you dont need to really brush - more just kinda wipe them teethies off... but they do make finger teethbrushes and tuna flavored toothpaste! Check petsmart...

Re: Meezers with bad teeth
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 5:37 PMThe advice from the breeder of my first siamese was to not feed them any tinned food if possible, just dry pellets or fresh fish or chicken, to keep their teeth in condition. I have always done that, and none of mine ever had teeth problems ( and no, I don't brush their teeth, nor would they thank me if I tried ! ) but I don't know if with tinned food their teeth would have been fine anyway .... they all lived well over 20 and the problem just never came up. -

Re: Meezers with bad teeth
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 5:49 PMYeah now its Karma's turn - my other meezer. Brandy's breath was toxic last April, now Karma's is. Her turn for a trip to the kitty dentist butman - I hope its not $600 again!! But I DO hope they take her big front fangs out - she's bitten me a few times - evil b!tch. Ones broken and the other is loose so I'll bet they come out. -

Re: Meezers with bad teeth
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 7:03 PMso little miss Karma went to the kitty dentist. she got a tune up - teeths cleaned, butt glands and ears cleaned, claws trimmed, full blood panel done. Shes perfectly healthy! They only extracted one tooth - that horrible front fang that I was hoping would go. They gave it to me, I have it in Formalin at work. I showed it to my boss, hes an older dentist/oral surgeon, about 70 - I work in a dental/oral surgery clinic, and the tooth is just thick with dark calculus around the top, and my boss asked 'Is she a smoker?' LOL I cracked up. But Karma bounced right back and shes fine. I went out of town for the weekend and felt bad leaving her but I came home and she was attacking her toys and running around and very happy to see me ;-)
i wonder if she sits around and smokes when I'm at work... shes probably drinking my beer too.
