taking her thyroid pill

I don't know if anyone else has had the joyful experience of administering more than one dose per day of a pill to their cat. My cat recently was diagnosed with a thyroid problem and she is supposed to take 1/2 a pill twice a day. The problem is that she is very difficult about it. I got one of those pill shooter things, and it doesn't work as she just gags the pill back up and spits it out. But that;s when I'm even lucky enough to get close enough to even try. She becomes very hostile about it and yes, she will scratch and bite. I try to hide it in food, a piece of chicken or steak. Sometimes this works. Other times it is too easily identified and gets spit out while she eats the rest. This is incredibly frustrating. She is not getting the meds she needs. Does anyone know what can be done? Sometimes I think it's just a scam for the vets and med companies to make some money off of us, but if she really is sick, I want her to get the meds! Any advice??

Meezer Care

Question:

I've got two cats with fleas. This is unusual since the cats don't typically have fleas until June. But with global warming and all, it's hitting us early. Anyway, I don't use flea collars or drops anymore - the meezer got really sick the last time, ended in the ER of a pet emergency care hospital.

My question is this: How often can I bathe a meezer? I don't want to put him or the poor tabby that we also have *acquired* through the potential problems that OTC collars and drops seem to create. What I'm thinking is that I could bathe them once a month and keep the place vacuumed.

Does anyone know if it's a good idea to bathe a meezer monthly? Meezers have fur that is "silkier" than most cat fur. I wonder if I might be hurting the cat by bathing him too much...

Alpha cat syndrome

I think Giselle has a real issue with being the "alpha-cat" of the house. We had two kittens brought home by my brother. She had a year to get used to them, know they are part of the famiy, etc and she just won't let up. Sadly one of the kittens died, presumably he was hit by a car but we will never know. The other one, Oscar, is lonely and missing his brother but Giselle will not let up. She is always hissing and growling and sometimes attacking Oscar. The funny thing is that Oscar doesn't seem to be phased by it. But who knows, it might be really scary to him and now that Felix is gone, he might be more lonely. I just want to know if it's a meezer thing to have such opposition towards other cats or what. When I brought Giselle home, our other cat was horrible to her, always hissing at her and such but it calmed down over the years. Now I think she is just too old to care but Felix and Oscar were never a target of her anger. Giselle on the other hand just can't let it go. I know meezers are more emotional than other cats and maybe that is why but does anyone have any advice? And do you think she will ever calm down about it?

I am new to the tribe, so this topic may have been discussed before. but does anyone know why Siamese bite? Cleo, my male, will let me pet him (and only me) then he will turn on me and aggresivley bite and kick me. He is 4 yrs. old. I have had him since he was a baby and he has never been hurt or traumatized by another animal or person. the older he gets the worse he gets. I could never get rid of him, so does anyone know how to break him of biting me?

all of my three siamese are bulimic or something, they throw up their dried cat food constantly, all over the house. have done so most of their lives. anybody else have this? its like they will scoff down food and shortly thereafter barf it up. the only thing that seems to help is if i give them a can of sardines in oil once a week....oh cuz they seem to have hairballs too.

I would chase them around the house with the banana, just to hear them hiss like crazy, soooooo funny.........
Most I know of, are afraid of vacuums, ofcourse, and brooms too..........

I'm so thrilled with the new addition to my little kitty family! His name is Fuji, and he's a lynx point siamese. I found him at a local Los Angeles kitten rescue agency named "Singita". He was really shy and introverted and only hid, the foster mom told me. She said he needed "a lot of work". And I said I was ready to give it. But I got him home, and within 24 hours he turned into a playful, energetic, outgoing, interactive, curious, rambunctious little rascal!

I am so pleased with my new baby, and I encourage anyone looking for a new addition to their family to check out the shelters and rescue agencies, because there are a lot of *beautiful* meezers out there waiting to find their forever homes! :)

Very noisy (reluctant) indoor MeeZer

OHMYGOD! Will I ever get a full night sleep again? The whole complicated story was posted on the Animal behavior tribe:
http://tinyurl.com/aqdnn

Franky has been back home with us for four nights now. We're keeping him locked in at least for a couple weeks (or for as long as we can stand it!) in the hopes that he will start to recognize our house as "home" again or at the very least it's "the place with the food".

Nights 1 & 2 were all about growling and snarling and huffing about. The past two nights he's calmed down quite a bit (thanks to Rescue Remedy and Felaway) and now it's constant meowing in all pitches, volumes and ranges all.... night....long. Oh, and lets not forget hours and hours of scratching in the litter box!

I know some of you in this tribe keep your kitties indoors all the time. And I know most meezers are chatty. So I have to ask; how do you sleep?

Meezers with bad teeth

So my 8 year old Brandy had breath you could smell across the room, like something was DYING in there. Took her to get her teethies looked at and they were rotting and infected and the vet extracted 5 FIVE!! of her teeth including her killer long front sabertooth upper fangs. It was quite a surgery for the poor thing, and her temperature dropped and they had to give her fluids and put her in an incubator and it turned into a much bigger deal than I expected. Not to mention I was NOT expecting a $600 tab!! But she bounced back so fast, and although she only has like 3 teeth left now (she'd had a couple extracted a few years ago) shes wolfing down the dry food (and throwing it back up!).

So is it true that meezers are known for having bad teeth? Her sister Karma hasnt had nearly as many teeth problems as Brandy.

Have any of you experience with meezers bringing home the food they caught ?
Mostly, if mine catch anything, they eat it in the garden, except when there is a small kitten around; then the big ones bring the occasianal small prey home for the kid to play with.
And I had a big Siamese Tomcat once, at the time when I was very sick a lot, who worried that I could not get out of bed to get food... so when I had a high fever and stayed in bed, he went and caught me a big bird every day for dinner ( not a fiddlin' little starling, but a dove or something that size ) and brought it to me in bed, all alive and undamaged. Not when I was up, only when I was very sick, but then every day, never failing. I always thanked him profusely ( and let the bird fly away when he wasn't looking ) It really touched me, that he would not let me starve....

Well I had been trying to figure out a way to get Giselle to not go outside and it seems as if by some strange coincidence, she wont go out anymore. She will act like she wants to, but then she will go out and not even two minutes later she will be plucking at the screen to come back in. This has been going on since New Year's Eve and in Maryland it hasn't really been that cold or snowy so it's not like the weather sucks and that's why. It's so wierd, but I am so happy for it!!!! Has something like this ever happened to anyone else before? I wonder if it means something. I guess the true test will be when it's summertime!

Siamese fur

While at the vet not long ago, I read in one of the books stashed in the waiting room that the reason why Siamese have the particular markings they do is not specifically because of genetic determination, like other cats, but is due to their fur being heat-sensitive. Fur is lighter near the warmer core of the body and darker at the extremities (nose, ears, tail, paws) where the body temperature is a little cooler. It explains, too, why kittens start out so much lighter (my Albertine was nearly white as a kitten and is now very dark brown) - their total body temperature cools slightly as they age.

Interestingly enough, my cat had her chest shaved at that same appointment to facilitate some X-rays & sonograms. When that square of fur grew back in, it was a perfect black square - apparently the unprotected skin was colder than the rest of her and created darker fur! Anyway, if you click on my pictures you can see the young Albertine as a kitten. She's still my baby!

Hartz 3-in-1 Flea Drops

The past couple of years, I've been treating Tyler with these flea drops. The ingredients are insecticides but he won't tolerate wearing a collar. These drops also seemed to make him a little ill. He'd be droopy and not eat well for a few days after I treated him. Well, last night on the news, I heard that Hartz was pulling these things off the market - it seems that cats are starting to get really sick from them. I'm advising everyone to avoid them.

Hi! I have my first meezer and she is a doll! She does this funny thing though. When she wants to get up on my lap, she just gets up and plops down and is there for the duration (unless I cough or move to get up...then she bolts and runs). Most of my other cats have kneeded to get comfortable and *then* lie down. Is this a meezer trait??

If so, were they similar in character to a Siamese?
I know this tribe is solely for Siamese, but curious.......

indoor/outdoor to just indoor

It was never my intention to let my meezer become an outdoor cat but her big sister goes out and since she was a stray its not like we could really keep her in. It's like the thing is, the older cat is getting to the end of her days, and the meezer finds a lot more trouble. I hate that she goes out, I hate not knowing where she is at night sometimes, or when she kills bunnies or anything like that. She's been bitten by a possum and got stuck up a big tree and I just dont want anythign worse. With the other cat going out its really hard to keep her in, but after her time is up which I am dreading, I want to keep Giselle inside. As we all know this is a much more difficult task when it comes to meezers but are there any tips on ways to keep her in, or are we just damned to have a meezer on the loose outside forever now?

I am wondering if there is something like Siamese cats might get alongwith each other better than if it were just a regular cat coming into the picture. I want to get another Meez but I am afraid that Giselle will torture her. She is pretty mean to other cats that have come around even when her own babies came back to visit. And what a hypocrite because our older cat Blackie is so mean to her but she stops at nothing to play with her and be her friend. Its so wierd. I guess cuz Blackie was here first but if there were to be another of her kind coming into the picture is there something that makes them get along better with each other? That may seem like a dumb question but I see pictures of people and their meezers happily snuggling up together and I wish I could have that too!

Anyone else have a cat that smurgles? I had a blue point that liked to suck on my pillowcases (had to put a stop to that) and a seal point that liked to suck on a particular blanket or the carpet. I've heard that it is a siamese "thing" and I just wondered if anyone else has seen this.

so i have one boneless cat. the other one - the bluepoint Karma gets all weird when I sneeze. i have bad allergies and sneeze alot and she takes it personally. at first the noises she made after I sneeze, I thought were her saying bless you - but now I know she thinks i'm pissed at her. she sits in her meatloaf position w/ her eyes all angry looking and grumbles. so whenever i sneeze i hear this grumbling come from somewhere, and she gets into a snit. so everytime i sneeze now i have to go pick her up and squeeze her and make sure she knows i still love her. such a weird little beast.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking something Asian and fiery -- because of his personality. :D

I had a Siamese. But my ex stole him away. I want a Siamese. I love cats, but Siamese are by far my FAVS.......They have so much personality and the 2 Siamese that I have had in my life, were very attached to me, did tricks, they just ROCKED.........By the way, does anyone out there have a "pure bred" and does it really make a difference when it comes to Siamese?
The first of the 2 Siamese I had, used to sunbathe on my windowsill, well, this is NY, my mom says she thinks someone grabbed her. The second Siamese I had, my ex ran off with. I didn't want to pursue and fight, b/c I knew he loved the cat and would give him(the cat) a happy life. But sad am I, no Siamese here.........

Finally, there's a cat in the house again. Not Siamese, but don't shoot me. Kezia (the name means 'sweet-scented spice) is a cinnamon-smoke ocicat, with some dappling on her sides. She's a beauty; see the photos for proof.

For those not familiar with the breed, ocicats are an all-domestic (no wild hybridization) spotted cat orginated by crossing abyssinian and Siamese cats. It was an attempt to get an aby-pointed meezer, but it didn't work out that way. American shorthairs were brought in later to get silver shades. Most ocicats are spotted (in various colors) but there are occasional solids and smokes. Smokes have a silver undercoat.

Kezia isn't vocal like my Siamese were, but she follows me around the house like they did. Her eyes are gold rather than blue. Her fur is dense and feels as silky as a Siamese. She's very playful; likes to initiate games of 'tag' by grabbing me around the calf and running off.

We're doing okay as a twosome, but the next cat that comes is will prob'ly be Siamese (preferably lilac).

Guys, a fellow tribesman recommended I check out a website for Siamese cats rescue. I did it immediately. But I wasn't prepared for the heartbreak it caused me. Just seeing all those pics of neglected or abused cats, was all I could take. It really choked me up. I always avoid hearing/seeing or thinking about cat neglect or abuse, b/c it is soooo horrific and tears me up. I can't imagine how people in this world can be so heartless. And I can't even bear to think about it. Of all the harshness and ugliness that this world can have, this is one aspect I just can't face, or hear about.....UUHHGGG
I wish all the cats in this world "LOVE & Happiness"

Tyler has a slight "hook" at the end of his tail. It's the last, oh, two inches of his tail. I can straighten it out with my fingers but when he's at rest, I mean, when I'm not fooling with the end of his tail, it naturally comes to a sort of hook. Is this a meezer thing or has Tyler had an injury that I wasn't there to see?

Crazy Meezers!

My Giselle wakes up in the morning and all she wants to do is play. She starts drinking the water on the nightstand or starts knocking things over. She is so crazy, there is no chance to stay asleep. But she's so cute I just can't stay mad! One day she was on the coffee table attacking a paper clip. She fell off twice but it never seemed to stop her from trying. Does anyone else have any crazy meezer stories??

Well, brush me down and call me slappy! That's a big siamese cat! How long (from tail to head) is Hercules?

Tyler is barely 5 lbs., but longish, maybe about a foot long. He's a slender cat. Hercules looks slender - typical for meezers.

Feline Herpes? Need your help!

My Siamese is 11 and has suddenly started having stuffy nose, sneezing fits, etc over the last 10 months. A rhinoscopy at the vet helped clear the gunk out and biopsies came back negative for cancer. She does not have any fungi either. Doc is guessing its feline herpes and that we can treat the smpytoms with steroids (sounds scary!!!) and decongestants.

Has anyone every dealt with this stuff?

Hey my traditional applehead has a funny belly pouch. It is very dark brown and we call it "the Fudge". She loves to lie on her back while someone rubs the fudge. It is hilarious!

Does anyone else's cat "give up the fudge"? ;-)

A Meezer thing or something wrong??

As of the past few days my meezer has been acting much more vocal and needy. It started the other day when I opened the door and tried to get her to come in but she was just sitting by the garden meowing at me, but not making any moves to come in. I didn't know what was going on, so I just gave up on getting her to come in and didn't really think too much of it. Then, for the past few nights after that she has been sitting in the kitchen meowing at us, and it seems like even if we feed her, she will start back at it again, or if we let her out, she does it again when she coems back in. It could be no one in the kitchen or living room and she just sits there crying untik someone comes out and so I am wondering could there be something wrong with her, or is she just acting like a spoiled brat? Does anyone else have any similar stories or advice?

Does anyone here have a Meez who gets really lovey-dovey-cuddly, and then all of a sudden "flips out" like a "totally sweet" ninja ( http://www.realultimatepower.net/ ), and puts the psycho tooth-and-claw clamp his keeper's forearm?

My Brutus, normally a gentle and affectionate cat, goes ballistic like this every once-in-a-while. He left me some good scars this morning.

I don't know about anyone else, but Giselle eats SOOOOOO much! it doesn't make sense. She used to be so muscular and slim, now she is a fatty :p I have read that Siamese cats have a tendency to eat a lot. I guess it is hard because she also eats our other cat Blackie's food too, so she gets way too much. Does anyone have this same problem or have any solutions?

Ok. Bukky is the first Siamese cat I've had since infancy. I know there are different types of coloring on Siamese. What are they?

Bukky looks so gray, I wonder if he will get brown when he grows up? Or are there gray Siamese?

Hey there. Just got an invite and glad to be here. My cats will have their picture in the photo album shortly. I have one Oriental Siamese Seal Point (a smaller breed of the original) named Superfrank (a.k.a. Frankie) and a purebred Tonkinese Blue Point or Lilac Point (I can't remember which) named Ricochet (a.k.a. Man Kitty).

I'll have to get some pics of my mom's five: one pure chocolate Tonk, one Blue Point Siamese, one Seal Point Oriental Siamese and two Seal Point Siamese/Tonkinese mixes (Taser, Lola, Piewacket, Fernando and Fiona, respectively).

Coming soon.

I have three:

Rocky I found by a dumpster by a grocery store. He was about 1yr. (He's still missing)

Franky Was a tiny kitten in a cardboard box in a cemetary. So cute and personable, I can't believe someone would abandon him!

And my newest baby, Dizzy came from the pound. They called to tell me they had a cat that fit Rocky's description. Aside from being a chocolate point they look nothing alike, but 5 minutes alone with Dizzy and I was in love!

Your turn!

It has been a while since I've been on Tribe so I hadn't checked this in a while. But I am so happy to see that there are some members now and that people have posted pictures of thier Meezers. They are all fantastically adorable! I definitely encourage more of this. Now that I will be back on here more frequently I'll be posting more topics and such and just being more involved. If you know anyone else who has a Meezer or just loves them too, let them know about this place! Thank you all again :)
